Intel “Santa Rosa” Platform Officially Announced

Intel Intel today introduced the new Centrino “Santa Rosa” notebook computer technology. The latest “Santa Rosa”-based laptops with “Centrino Duo” and “Centrino Pro” logos feature the new Mobile Intel 965 Express chipsets, 64-bit Core 2 Duo processors with increased front side bus speed to 800MHz from 667MHz, a new integrated graphics, a wireless N connection with greater speed and range, a Turbo Memory for faster boot-up and application loading, and Intel’s Active Management Technology in business-use models.

The major notebook makers have already released the first “Santa Rosa” notebooks. Intel expects the release of more than 230 Centrino Duo and Centrino Pro processor technology-based designs from PC manufacturers, resellers and integrators around the world to be released this year.

Gigabyte to Unveil “Bearlake”-Based Motherboards at Computex

Gigabyte's Gigabyte United expects to launch its Ultra Durable 2 series motherboards with Intel’s next-generation “Bearlake” chipsets at Computex 2007 Show in Taipei, from June 5 – 9, DailyTech reports.

“There will be five Ultra Durable 2 series motherboards powered by Intel’s P35 and G33 Express chipsets – the P35-DQ6, P35-DS3R, P35T-DQ6, G33M-D2SR and G33-DS3R in full and micro ATX configurations. Gigabyte United pairs all five Ultra Durable 2 series motherboards with Intel’s ICH9R south bridge for enhanced I/O connectivity”, the report says.

MSI P35 Platinum D3 Motherboard to Support DDR3 Memory

MSI P35 Platinum D3HardwareZone has published details of a forthcoming MSI P35 Platinum D3 motherboard based on Intel’s “Bearlake” chipset. The MSI P35 Platinum D3 will support DDR3 memory modules with speeds of up to 1333MHz, according to the report.

Along with a LGA775 socket supporting Intel’s 64-bit processors, and four DDR3 memory slots, the P35 Platinum D3 will feature two PCI, two PCIe x1 and two PCIe x16 slots.

Lenovo ThinkPad “Santa Rosa” Notebooks Coming in May

Lenovo ThinkPad Lenovo will release in May the “Santa Rosa” platform based ThinkPad T61 and R61 14.1-inch widescreen notebooks, according to IBM’s web site. Both next-generation Intel Centrino laptops feature new 64-bit Core 2 Duo processors (T7100, T7300, T7500, and T7700) and will come with 32-bit and 64-bit versions of Windows Vista.

ThinkPad T61 and ThinkPad R61 are both built on Intel GM/PM965 chipsets with 800MHz front side bus, and have Wireless N (IEEE 802.11n draft) and Intel Graphics Media Accelerator X3100 IGP, while select models incorporate dedicated NVIDIA Quadro NVS 140M graphics, Intel Turbo Memory technology for faster boot-up and application loading, and broadband wireless connectivity options. These “Santa Rosa” ThinkPads support up to 4GB of main DDR2 memory.

Intel Cuts Desktop, Server CPU Prices

IntelIntel has published price cuts of up to 40% for its select desktop and server processors, DigiTimes reports.

Regarding desktop-use CPUs, the Core 2 Quad Q6600 has fallen in price to US$530 while CPUs in the Core 2 Duo E6X00-series have been cut by up to 40%. Intel has also cut the price of the Core 2 Duo E4300 from US$163 to US$113, as well as of the Pentium D 935, 925, 915 and 820 processors for 37%, 35%, 12% and 6% respectively.
