AMD Athlon 70 CPUs for Quad FX PlatformAMD today officially introduced the AMD Quad FX Platform with Dual Socket Direct Connect (DSDC) Architecture, known as 4×4 platform. The AMD Quad FX Platform is powered by pairs of the new AMD Athlon 64 FX-70 series dual-core processors, while the DSDC Architecture enables high-bandwidth communication between matched pairs of AMD Athlon 64 FX-70, AMD Athlon 64 FX-72, and AMD Athlon 64 FX-74 dual-core processors. DSDC Architecture is designed for the with planned platform upgradeability to eight cores.

“The AMD Quad FX Platform offers enthusiasts absolute performance, flexibility, and customization by including outrageous features like twelve SATA controllers designed to enable up to nine terabytes of storage using currently available drive technologies, and increased spacing between PCI-E slots to accommodate up to four high-performance graphics cards”, the AMD’s press release says.

Pricing for pairs of the new AMD Athlon 64 FX-70, FX-72 and FX-74 dual-core processors is $599, $799 and $999, respectively. AMD Athlon 64 FX-70 series dual-core processors are expected to be available from NewEgg throughout North America on November 30. Worldwide product availability is expected by early 2007. AMD Quad FX Platform systems are expected to be available from Vigor, Cyber Power and IBUYPOWER and other major system builders are expected to offer systems in the near future, AMD published.

FlashAlthough both 32-bit and 64-bit Windows Vista versions are released to manufacturing, there is still no 64-bit Flash Player, making it impossible to view Flash content in 64-bit web browsers. Adobe says its developers are working on Flash Player support for 64-bit platforms as part of company’s “ongoing commitment to the cross-platform compatibility of Flash Player”. But, Adobe hasn’t yet announced timing or release dates.

The company says users currently must use 32-bit Flash Player in 32-bit browser to view Flash content on a 64-bit operating system. In 64-bit Windows Vista both 64-bit and emulated 32-bit Internet Explorer are installed by default. Linux users must install 32-bit browser and 32-bit Flash Player plug-in on their 64-bit operating systems.

Since 64-bit Linux users downgrade their browsers for years in order to use Flash, and since Microsoft’s 64-bit Vista (retail) and Apple’s 64-bit Mac OS X Leopard operating systems are scheduled to ship in January and spring 2007 respectively, we hope that 64-bit Flash will be released by then.

intelReuters reports Intel is manufacturing prototypes of its upcoming Penryn processor core. Penryn is the upcoming 45nm die shrink of Intel’s Core 2 architecture. Intel is currently on track to introduce Penryn core processors in the second half of 2007.

As Penryn is currently in its prototype stages Intel’s director of process architecture and integration, Mark Bohr stated: “We are processing the first samples of the Penryn design. These samples will go back to the design team to determine if design is working as expected.”

DailyTech reports Intel is expected to ship 45nm products very soon after AMD makes its final transition to 65nm and after Intel refreshes its current Conroe based product lineup. Penryn will also be the last product based on Intel’s Core architecture.

AMD Athlon 64 X2 AMD will presumably roll out four new 65nm processors early next month. The report said AMD will introduce its new dual-core Athlon 64 X2 CPU (codenamed Brisbane) on December 5. The reason behind the launch, which is called earlier-than-expected, is said Dell’s considerable consumption of AMD CPUs that caused the CPU shortage at the clone market, according to a Commercial Times report.

Intel Core 2 DuoRelease of the new Intel Core 2 Duo E4300 processor is scheduled on 21 January next year, HKEPC reports.

“Intel Core 2 Duo E4300 is the first native 2MB L2 Conroe at L2 Stepping. The processor is running at 1.8GHz, 800MHz FSB and 9X multiplier. Without adding voltage, 1066MHz FSB is mostly achieved and runs really stable. At 1066 MHz FSB, the clock speed is further enhanced to 2.4GHz. Compared with Core 2 Duo E6400 (2.13GHz/2MB L2/1066MHz FSB), this can provide a 10-15% higher performance, but the price is much cheaper, say Core 2 Duo E4300 at $163 vs Core 2 Duo E6300 at $183″, the report says.
